For starters, you'll need an NSF Fastlane account. I made one some while ago, so I won't cover that, and just assume that we're all set up.

  1. Go to NSF FastLane and click the Sign In to Fastlane button
  2. You should end up on a page called My Desktop. The first item listed under the NSF FastLane Services heading is Proposal, Awards & Status. Click that link
  3. What do you want to work on? Why, a Proposal Function, of course!
  4. To be more specific, you will then want to initiate Proposal Preparation
  5. If not already populated, you can now edit your PI demographic information
  6. Alternatively (or if this is all taken care of) you will then click the Prepare Proposal button
    • You get a temporary proposal number, and this proposal will be highlighted. You can then edit the details of this proposal.
  7. Editing the proposal is where you add individual documents: the Cover Sheet, References, Budget, etc.
