The MATLAB academic license needs to be renewed on a yearly basis. A reminder message is displayed when starting up MATLAB during the 60 days leading up to the license expiry. Renewing the license is handled directly via an email to software-license@buffalo.edu

For each machine running MATLAB, you will need to provide the OS platform (Win | Mac | Linux) and the hardware address. Additionally, this would be a good time to ask for a version update if available (The R20xxa release is available in the spring, and should be available when renewing in the fall; the R20xxb release may not be available at that point).

Obtaining the hardware address

A hardware address is a 12-digit hexadecimal code that uniquely identifies an ethernet device. Because it is unique, MATLAB can query your hardware to get your ethernet card to report it's address, which in turn verifies that it is running on the hardware for which the renewed license file was generated.

On a Linux computer, open a terminal and run the following command:

ifconfig | grep HWaddr

Look for a line beginning with eth0

On a Mac OS X computer, open a terminal and run the following command:

ifconfig

Look for a block of output associated with the device en0. Within that block should be a line beginning with ether
